00100 GOALS FOR COMPUTING
00200
00300 by John McCarthy
00400
00500
00600 1. Advance the computing goals of the academic departments of Stanford.
00700 Thus the Computer Science Department may formulate goals from time to
00800 time that are not part of a goal structure previously formulated by the
00900 Computer Facilities Committee.
01000
01100 2. Provide a time-shared computer with adequate power for the following:
01200
01300 a. Provide the gross computer power required without undue
01400 queuing except for those with the most exorbitant demands.
01500
01600 b. Provide generally available languages and programs to the
01700 Stanford community.
01800
01900 c. Provide access to nationally available facilities via networking
02000 or directly from consoles.
02100
02200 d. Support small computers with files, control, assemblers,
02300 and compilers.
02400
02500 e. Provide support for whatever consoles may be cost effective
02600 at a given time.
02700
02800 f. Provide console support so that classes can require use of
02900 consoles for computing. This includes classes in other subjects than
03000 computing.
03100
03200 g. Make consoles available on campus to whoever wants them at the
03300 lowest technically feasible cost.
03400
03500 h. Provide disk file space at the lowest technically feasible
03600 cost. I understand the Computation Center does not do this now.
03700
03800 i. Provide on-line access by students and faculty to Stanford's
03900 information files with suitable privacy safeguards. Thus a student should
04000 be able to find out what grades and units have been recorded for him,
04100 but should not be able to find this out for other students.
04200
04300 j. Library information should be available through the consoles
04400 as soon as technology makes it economic.
04500
04600 k. There should be an adequate set of public consoles distributed
04700 about campus. This requires console rooms in convenient locations.
